About Us
Andrew G Podmore & Son was established in 1968 as a family run bsiness specialising in the restoration and conservation of antique furniture, internal architectural joinery and French polishing.
For more than 42 years we have been restoring and conserving furniture –and even
making it, when called on to do so. In those four decades, we have moved premises a number of times as the business has grown. Founder Andrew George established the first workshops with renown wood carver Dick Reid in Grape Lane. We later moved within the city of York to Fossgate, later moving to East Mount Road and finally, ten years ago, to our purpose-built workshop in Upper Poppleton.
As we have modernised our premises we have not abandoned our commitment to traditional craftsmanship, tools and materials. We still continue to have a glue kettle on the go -where fish and animal bones are boiled down to make glue–it is vital to use this traditional glue as it is not only strong and flexible (reducing joint stress) but it also enables us and future generations of craftsmen to dismantle joints without damage should this be required - say in 2100. It is, also useful when veneering. We believe it is important to maintain the traditional time proven methods and techniques including that most important ingredient of all, patience.
"Patience is one of the keys to achieving a good finish", says one of our craftsman- Andrew Jackson.
David Podmore now operates the business, son of Andrew. David heads a team of time served craftsmen having extensive experience of caring for, conserving and restoring your, or your clients valued pieces, undertaking all aspects of repair and refinishing on furniture using traditional skills.
With have many varied clients including architects, designers, dioceses, maintenance contractors and members of the public throughout the UK who have entrusted us with their work. These include commissions within museums, churches, cathedrals, municipal buildings, country houses and private homes.
We are proud to have completed many high profile contracts over the years. More recently we have undertaken work for projects for; The Ministry of Justice, The Lord Chancellor, Manchester City Council, York Civic Trust, National Trust
Our modern purpose built temperature controlled workshops, where visitors are always welcome, consist of separate cabinet and polishing shops with storage areas for ongoing work. We also have an extensive stock of reclaimed and salvaged timber to enable careful choice for replacing missing components and veneers.
We have received many testimonials from clients and were delighted to be awarded the team award from The York Guild of Building.
